Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our rental services.
No — an IDP is not required, and since 2019 a separate Cayman Visitor's Driving Permit isn't required either. Visitors with a valid driver's licence from a Convention country (US, UK, Canada, EU, most of the Commonwealth) can drive for up to 6 months on their home licence alone. No fee, no paperwork, no trip to the DVDL counter.
The left — Cayman follows the British convention, and steering wheels on our fleet are on the right-hand side of the vehicle (UK-style). Most US and Canadian visitors adjust within 20–30 minutes. All our cars carry a 'Keep Left' reminder on the dash, and we'll walk you through roundabouts and key routes before you drive off.
Drivers must be at least 25 years old and hold a valid driver's licence (held for at least 1 year). The maximum rental age is 75.
Fuel is not included. We operate a 'same level out, same level in' policy — bring the car back with the fuel gauge where you found it. Cayman has plenty of gas stations along West Bay Road, in George Town, and on the way to East End.
Basic third-party liability insurance is included in every rental by law. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Supplemental Liability can be added at pickup — we strongly recommend CDW, especially if it's your first time driving on the left. Your home credit card may also provide rental coverage; just bring documentation.
Yes — free curbside delivery at Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM). Share your flight number at checkout and we'll track it; meet our representative curbside after clearing customs. You're on the road in about 15 minutes. We can also meet you at your hotel on Seven Mile Beach by arrangement.
Our counter keeps shorter hours on Sundays and Cayman public holidays, but airport pickups and pre-booked returns are always accommodated — just confirm the time with us at least 24 hours in advance. After-hours key drop is available outside the office.
Absolutely — Grand Cayman's roads are paved end to end, and the drive to Rum Point, Kaibo, or the East End blowholes is one of the best things you can do with a rental car. Budget roughly an hour each way from Seven Mile Beach. Off-road driving and beach driving are not permitted under the rental agreement.
Yes. Additional drivers must be present at pickup and meet the same age and licence requirements as the main driver (valid home-country licence, held at least 1 year, aged 25–75). A small daily fee applies.
You can cancel for free up to 48 hours before your scheduled pick-up time. Cancellations inside 48 hours may incur a fee equivalent to one day's rental.
No — Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Cayman Islands. The government has opted to protect the licensed taxi industry rather than permit ride-sharing apps. A few local alternatives have come and gone (the Flex app is currently suspended; Island: GO! operates on a smaller scale). The government-run CI:GO app is a fare calculator — it confirms what a taxi ride should cost but doesn't hail rides. For most visitors, a rental car is the most reliable and affordable way to get around.
Basic third-party liability insurance is included by law in every rental — this covers damage or injury you may cause to other people or property. It does NOT cover damage to the Rodney's vehicle itself. For that, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is available as a paid add-on at pickup; we strongly recommend it, especially if this is your first time driving on the left. Supplemental Liability is also available for higher coverage limits.
Sometimes — many premium credit cards (Amex, Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture) offer secondary rental car coverage, and a few offer primary coverage. Coverage terms vary by card issuer and some exclude Cayman Islands rentals entirely. If you plan to decline our CDW, bring printed proof of your card's coverage to pickup and confirm with your card issuer before you travel. Credit cards generally do NOT cover third-party liability — that's why basic liability insurance is included in every Rodney's rental by law.
A hold is placed on your credit card at pickup to cover the estimated total rental amount. If you accept Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), no additional damage deposit is needed. If you decline CDW, an additional security deposit is held to cover the damage excess. Debit cards are accepted for the rental itself but a credit card in the primary driver's name is required for the security hold.
Every vehicle in Rodney's fleet is automatic — economy compacts, mid-size sedans, SUVs, Jeep Wranglers, and 7- and 9-seater vans. If you only drive automatic at home, you won't need to brush up on a stick shift before your trip.
