Grand Cayman in 3 Days — The Rental Car Itinerary
Updated 2026-04-22
The short version
Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Grand Cayman. You can hit Seven Mile Beach, Rum Point, Stingray City, George Town, and one East End or West Bay adventure without feeling rushed. A rental car is essentially required — there's no Uber in Cayman, taxis are expensive, and buses don't run on a practical schedule for this kind of itinerary. Family-owned rentals from Rodney's start at US$35/day; a mid-size sedan or 5-seater SUV is what most 3-day itineraries use.
Day 1 — Settle in, Seven Mile Beach, George Town dinner
Land at Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM). Meet our driver curbside — free airport delivery takes about 15 minutes total (license check, paperwork, walkaround). No permit fee; your home-country driver's license is all you need. Drive to your Seven Mile Beach hotel and check in. Walk or drive the 5-minute stretch to Public Beach (free parking, bathrooms, the calmest water on Seven Mile). Late afternoon: Camana Bay for a casual lunch at Agua or Taikun, then browse the shops. Evening: dinner at The Brasserie in George Town or Blue by Eric Ripert if you're splurging. Early night — you've got Rum Point tomorrow.
Day 2 — Rum Point, Kaibo, and Stingray City (optional)
Leave Seven Mile Beach by 9 AM. Take the scenic coastal route (West Bay Road → Shamrock Road → Queen's Highway through Bodden Town → Frank Sound Road), about 55 minutes. Optional morning: detour to Kaibo dock for a 10:30 AM Stingray City tour (book ahead). Skip the tour and you arrive at Rum Point by 10 AM for a clear-water swim and the public beach. Lunch at Kaibo downstairs (half-mile east) around 1 PM. Linger. Drive back via the direct cross-island route (Frank Sound Road → Esterley Tibbetts Highway) in about 45 minutes. Dinner near the hotel — this is your tired day.
Day 3 — East End adventure OR West Bay attractions
Two good options for Day 3. Option A: the East End. Drive the Queen's Highway past Bodden Town and visit the Blowholes (free, spectacular on a high tide), the Wreck of the Ten Sails monument, and Collier's Beach. Lunch at Tukka in East End Village. Back to hotel by 4 PM. Option B: West Bay attractions. Visit the Cayman Turtle Centre (2–3 hours, great for kids), then Hell (the limestone formation and tacky post office), then sunset at the Cracked Conch. Both options work in a single day; pick based on what your group is into.
What to pack in the rental
Reef-safe sunscreen (regular kinds damage coral and are banned at some beaches). Towels for 3 days. Snorkel gear if you have it — Rum Point and Smith Cove both reward it. A soft cooler for drinks and snacks. Phone chargers (drives are short but steady use adds up). A waterproof phone pouch for Stingray City if you're going. Collapsible beach wagon if you've got kids and gear.
Which vehicle for this itinerary
For two adults: a mid-size sedan (Honda Accord, Toyota Camry class) is the comfortable pick — enough cargo for beach gear, enough comfort for the Rum Point drive. For a family of four: a 5-seater SUV (Toyota RAV4, Jeep Wrangler) handles the gear and works on the rougher North Side road approaches. For 5+ travellers: 7-seater SUV (Toyota Highlander, Audi Q7) or 9-seater van. Economy compacts work too — they're tighter but US$35/day is US$35/day.
Pro tips
Reserve your Stingray City tour before you fly — popular boats sell out 48–72 hours ahead in high season. Book your rental car at least 2 weeks in advance for December–April travel. Fuel up the day before your airport return — the closest gas stations to Owen Roberts are on Crewe Road and near Camana Bay. Don't leave valuables in the car at beach parking lots; use the trunk or bring them onto the beach. Tipping is standard: 15–18% at sit-down restaurants, round up for taxis and tours.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 3 days enough to see Grand Cayman?
- Yes for a first visit. You'll see Seven Mile Beach, George Town, Rum Point, and either the East End or West Bay attractions without rushing. What you won't squeeze in: a full day of diving, a Brac/Little Cayman excursion, or multiple beach days in the same spot. If you want those, plan 5–7 days.
- Do I need a rental car for this 3-day itinerary?
- Yes. There's no Uber in Cayman, taxis are expensive (US$50+ each way to Rum Point), and public buses don't run on a schedule that fits a tight itinerary. Rodney's family-owned rentals start at US$35/day with free airport and hotel delivery — the car pays for itself by Day 2.
- What's the best time of year for this trip?
- December through April is our high season — best weather, highest prices, most crowds. May–June and November are the sweet spot: warm water, empty beaches, 20–30% lower hotel and rental rates. Avoid late August through early October (peak hurricane season).
- Where should I stay for this itinerary?
- Seven Mile Beach puts you closest to the airport (10 min), George Town (15 min), and Rum Point (55 min). Best hotels for this itinerary: Kimpton Seafire, Westin, Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, Margaritaville, Grand Cayman Marriott. All of them get free rental-car delivery from Rodney's — meet the car at the lobby on Day 1.
