Do You Need a Visitor's Driving Permit in the Cayman Islands?

Updated 2026-04-13

Short answer: no

Since 2019, the Cayman Islands no longer requires visitors to buy a temporary Visitor's Driving Permit. If you have a valid driver's license from your home country, you can drive in Cayman for up to 6 months — no permit, no fee, no DVDL counter visit. Some outdated travel blogs and older rental-company pages still mention a US$7.50 permit; that rule was scrapped years ago.

What you need at the rental counter

Bring your home-country driver's license (held for at least 1 year), a credit card in the main driver's name, and a passport or government photo ID. Minimum age to rent with Rodney's Car Rental is 25.

Staying longer than 6 months?

Residents and long-term visitors need to convert to a Cayman Islands license at the Department of Vehicle and Drivers' Licensing (DVDL) in George Town.
