Should You Rent a Car in Grand Cayman?
Updated 2026-04-22
The short answer: yes, for most visitors
If you're staying more than two nights on Grand Cayman and plan to see more than your hotel pool, renting a car is almost always better value, faster, and more enjoyable than taxis or public transit. Grand Cayman is 76 square miles, roads are well-paved, and parking is plentiful and usually free. Two round-trip taxi rides between Seven Mile Beach and George Town will cost you roughly the same as a full day of rental.
When you don't need a rental car
Skip the rental if: (1) you're on a cruise ship in port for fewer than 6 hours — book a shore excursion instead; (2) you're staying on Seven Mile Beach for a short trip and only want the beach and a few restaurants, all within walking distance or a short taxi ride; (3) you don't have a driver aged 25+ with a valid license.
When you absolutely need a rental car
Get a rental if you want to visit Rum Point, Kaibo, Starfish Point, the East End blowholes, Cayman Turtle Centre, or Pedro St. James. These are impossible to reach affordably without a car. Public buses don't go to most of them; taxis cost CI$40-80 each way.
No Uber, no Lyft — so what are the alternatives?
Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Cayman Islands. The government opted to protect the licensed taxi industry rather than allow ride-sharing apps. A few local alternatives have come and gone — the Flex app was the closest Uber-equivalent but is currently suspended; Island: GO! runs a smaller-scale carpooling and ride-booking service that works for some visitors. The CI:GO app is a government-run taxi fare calculator — it confirms what a taxi trip should cost, but doesn't hail rides. For anyone beyond a short-walk-only Seven Mile Beach stay, a rental car from a family-owned operator like Rodney's is the most reliable and affordable way around Grand Cayman. No surge pricing, no unavailable-drivers screen at 11 PM.
Cost comparison: rental vs. taxis
Economy car rental at Rodney's Car Rental starts at US$35/day in summer. A single round-trip taxi from Seven Mile Beach to George Town (the cruise port) is about US$30. A round-trip taxi to Rum Point for a group of four is CI$120-160. For any trip longer than 2 days, the rental pays for itself immediately.
Is it safe for visitors to drive in Grand Cayman?
Yes. Cayman roads are paved, well-signed, and well-lit. They drive on the left (British convention) — if you're from the US or mainland Europe, allow 30 minutes of careful driving to adjust. Speed limits are low (25-50 mph), crime against rental cars is extremely rare, and our fleet includes "Keep Left" dashboard reminders for first-time left-side drivers.
What you need at the rental counter
A valid driver's license from your home country (held at least 1 year), a credit card in the main driver's name, and a passport. No International Driving Permit required. Minimum age 25. USD and KYD both accepted.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a rental car in Grand Cayman?
- For any stay longer than 2 days, yes — a rental car costs significantly less than taxis, and it's the only way to reach Rum Point, the East End, and most snorkel/dive sites. If you're only staying on Seven Mile Beach for a weekend, you can get by with taxis.
- Is Uber available in Grand Cayman?
- No — Uber and Lyft do not operate in the Cayman Islands. The government banned them to protect the licensed taxi industry. Local alternatives like Flex (currently suspended) and Island: GO! exist on a smaller scale, and the government's CI:GO app confirms taxi fares but doesn't hail rides. Your realistic options are: licensed taxis (metered, expensive for longer trips), the public bus system (limited routes, stops around 11 PM), or a rental car — which is almost always the best value for stays longer than a weekend.
- Does Grand Cayman have ride-sharing apps?
- Not really. Flex was the closest Uber-equivalent but is currently suspended. Island: GO! operates as a smaller carpooling / ride-booking service. CI:GO (the government's official app) is a taxi fare calculator — useful for verifying prices but not for hailing rides. Most visitors find a rental car more practical for anything beyond short Seven Mile Beach hops.
- How much does a rental car cost in Grand Cayman?
- Economy cars start from US$35/day, mid-size sedans from US$45/day, SUVs from US$65/day, and Jeep Wranglers from US$85/day. Rates vary by season — December through April is our busiest window, so book ahead. Weekly rates offer meaningful savings — see our full fleet for live pricing.
- Do cruise passengers need a rental car in Grand Cayman?
- Usually no, because port days are only 6-9 hours and most cruise shore excursions include transport. But if you want to explore independently (Seven Mile Beach, Rum Point, Stingray City by boat, or just a driving tour), a single-day cruise-port rental is an excellent option — we're a 5-minute walk from the tender dock.
