A rental car in Grand Cayman starts at US$35 per day and rises with the vehicle class and the season. Those are all-in daily rates — delivery, airport pickup, and third-party liability are already included rather than added at the counter. Economy and compact (Toyota Corolla, Honda Fit, Kia Rio class) — from US$35/day. The cheapest way to get around, and genuinely enough car for two adults. Mid-size sedan (Honda Accord class) — from US$45/day, the comfort pick for couples doing the longer Rum Point and East End drives. 5-seater SUV (Toyota RAV4, Jeep Wrangler) — from US$65/day, the family sweet spot once beach gear is involved. Jeep Wrangler — from US$85/day, the vacation-photo vehicle, and our fastest-selling class December through April. 7-seater SUV (Toyota Highlander, Audi Q7) — for larger families and multi-generational trips. 8- and 9-seater vans — for wedding parties, church groups and dive trips. What's included in the price
Every Rodney's rate includes: free delivery to Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM), free delivery to any Grand Cayman hotel, condo, villa or Airbnb, third-party liability insurance, unlimited mileage, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. We don't add a credit-card surcharge, an airport concession fee, or a delivery fee — three line items that commonly appear on a Cayman rental bill elsewhere. The quote you see at checkout is the amount you pay.
What costs extra (and what should not)
Genuine optional extras: a collision damage waiver (CDW) if you want damage cover beyond the included third-party liability, child car seats and boosters at a small per-day rate, and an additional driver if you want a second person insured. A refundable security hold is placed on your credit card at pickup and released on return. What should never appear: a Visitor's Driving Permit fee. The Cayman Islands abolished that permit in 2019, but outdated blogs and some rental companies still quote a US$7.50–20 charge for it. If you are quoted a permit fee anywhere on-island in 2026, question it.
How season changes the price
December through April is Cayman's high season — best weather, highest demand, and the window where Jeeps and 7-seaters sell out weeks ahead. May, June and November are the value months: the water is still warm, the beaches are quiet, and rental and hotel rates drop meaningfully. Late August through early October is peak hurricane season, which brings the lowest rates of the year along with genuine weather risk. If your dates are flexible, shoulder season is where the savings are.
How to pay less
Book early — high-season walk-up rates are always higher than advance rates, and the cheapest classes go first. Book by the week rather than by the day if you're staying six nights or more; the weekly rate reduces the effective per-day cost. Take the smallest car that genuinely fits your group and gear — most visitors over-buy on vehicle size for an island that is 22 miles long. Decline the GPS upsell; your phone works fine on-island. And skip the pre-paid fuel option if it's offered: full-to-full and a stop at the Esso on Crewe Road before airport returns is always cheaper.
Rental car vs. taxis: the real comparison
There is no Uber or Lyft in the Cayman Islands, so the alternative to renting is licensed taxis. A single round-trip taxi between Seven Mile Beach and George Town runs about US$30. A round trip to Rum Point for four people is CI$120–160. Two moderate taxi days cost more than three days of an economy rental — and the rental also gets you to Smith Cove, the blowholes, and the Turtle Centre on your own schedule. For any stay longer than two days, the rental is the cheaper option, not the indulgent one.
