Rental Car Insurance in the Cayman Islands

Updated 2026-08-30

The short version

Third-party liability insurance is included in every Rodney's rental — it is legally required on Cayman roads and it is already in your quoted rate, not an upsell at the counter. What is optional is a collision damage waiver (CDW), which limits what you owe if the rental vehicle itself is damaged. Whether you need the CDW depends almost entirely on what your credit card already covers, and that is worth ten minutes of checking before you fly.

What third-party liability covers (included)

Third-party liability covers injury or damage you cause to other people, their vehicles, and their property. It is mandatory for every vehicle on Cayman roads, and it is built into your rental rate — you will never see it added as a separate line item on a Rodney's bill. What it does not cover is damage to the rental car itself. That is the gap the CDW fills.

What a collision damage waiver (CDW) does

A CDW is not technically insurance — it is a waiver in which the rental company agrees not to pursue you for damage to the vehicle, usually above a fixed excess amount. Take it and a parking-lot scrape becomes a formality rather than a bill. Decline it and you are responsible for damage to the car, which is exactly the situation your credit card's rental benefit may already be designed to cover. We'll quote the CDW rate for your specific vehicle class when you book.

Does your credit card already cover you in Cayman?

Many US and Canadian travel cards include rental car damage cover, and the Cayman Islands is usually an eligible territory — but three conditions almost always apply, and travellers get caught by all three. First, you must pay for the entire rental with that card. Second, you must decline the rental company's CDW, since card cover is typically secondary and void if you accept the waiver. Third, the cover often excludes certain vehicle categories. Call the number on the back of your card, ask specifically about the Cayman Islands and about your intended vehicle class, and ask them to email you confirmation. Do not rely on a summary web page.

Vehicle classes that credit cards commonly exclude

This is the detail that catches Jeep renters out. A number of card benefit programmes exclude open-top vehicles, large passenger vans (typically 9 seats or more), and expensive luxury vehicles above a stated value. Since Jeep Wranglers, 9-seater vans and our Mercedes and BMW models are three of our most-booked categories, check your card's exclusion list against the specific vehicle you intend to book — not against rental cars generally. If your card excludes it, the CDW is usually the sensible purchase.

What is never covered, by anyone

No waiver and no credit card protects you if you break the rental agreement. In the Cayman Islands that means: driving off-road or on any beach, which is prohibited island-wide and voids cover entirely; driving under the influence; letting an unlisted driver take the wheel; and driving without a valid licence held for at least a year. The off-road point matters more here than most places, because Jeep renters assume a 4x4 implies permission. It does not — Cayman is a paved-road-only island.

What your home auto policy probably does not do

Personal auto insurance from the US or Canada generally does not extend to the Cayman Islands. Domestic policies typically cover the US, and sometimes Canada, and stop there. Do not assume your policy at home follows you to Grand Cayman — check it explicitly, and treat your credit card benefit or the CDW as the realistic options rather than a fallback you have not confirmed.

Our recommendation

Call your card issuer before you travel and get written confirmation that your vehicle class in the Cayman Islands is covered. If you get it, decline the CDW and pay for the rental in full with that card. If you get anything less than a clear yes — or you're booking a Wrangler, a van, or a luxury vehicle — take the CDW. It costs less than one excess payment, and a holiday is a bad time to discover a coverage gap. Either way, ask us at pickup: we'd rather spend five minutes on this than have you find out afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need insurance to rent a car in the Cayman Islands?
Third-party liability insurance is legally required and is already included in every Rodney's rental rate. Cover for damage to the rental vehicle itself is optional — either through our collision damage waiver (CDW) or through a credit card that covers rentals in the Cayman Islands.
Does my credit card cover a rental car in Grand Cayman?
Often yes, but confirm it directly with your issuer. Card cover normally requires that you pay for the whole rental with that card and decline the rental company's CDW. Many programmes also exclude open-top vehicles, 9-seater vans and high-value luxury cars — so ask about your specific vehicle class, not rental cars in general.
What is CDW and should I take it?
A collision damage waiver limits what you owe if the rental car is damaged, usually above a set excess. Take it if your credit card doesn't cover Cayman rentals, if you can't get clear written confirmation, or if you're renting a Jeep Wrangler, a passenger van or a luxury vehicle — the three categories card programmes most often exclude.
Does my US car insurance cover me in the Cayman Islands?
Almost certainly not. US and Canadian personal auto policies generally cover only the US and sometimes Canada, and do not extend to the Cayman Islands. Plan on your credit card benefit or a CDW instead, and confirm rather than assume.
What voids rental car insurance in Grand Cayman?
Driving off-road or on a beach — which is prohibited across the Cayman Islands and is the most common way visitors void cover — plus driving under the influence, allowing an unlisted driver to drive, and driving without a valid licence held for at least one year.
Are there hidden insurance fees at Rodney's?
No. Third-party liability is included in the rate you're quoted, and the CDW is a clearly priced optional add-on you choose or decline at booking. There is no credit-card surcharge, no airport fee and no delivery fee.
